Gatekeeper's Museum & Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum 130 W. Lake Blvd. Tahoe City CA 96145 USA Phone: (530) 583-1762 Gatekeeper's Museum & Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum is just s. on SR 89 from jct. SR 28. The museum is a reconstruction of the original gatekeeper's cabin, which served as the residence for the dam attendant. Included are historic photographs and displays about Lake Tahoe, natural history and pioneers. The handiwork of more than 85 tribes is represented in the 800 baskets featured in the basket museum. Picnicking is permitted. Allow 30 minutes minimum.

Squaw Valley Cable Car Tahoe City CA 96145 USA Phone: (530) 583-6985 Squaw Valley Cable Car is 4 mi. n. on SR 89, then 2 mi. w. on Squaw Valley Rd. to Squaw Valley USA's base village. The cable car provides a full aerial view of Lake Tahoe and Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics and a year-round recreation area. Passengers are taken to the trailhead of the Pacific Crest Trail, where activities such as ice skating and swimming are offered. A museum at the summit commemorates those games. Activities packages are available.

Bliss State Park, on the west shore of Lake Tahoe between Meeks and Emerald bays, occupies 1,830 acres of forested mountain terrain. A sandy beach is at Rubicon Point, 2 miles north of Emerald Bay. Naturalist programs are available in the summer (staff permitting). Allow 3 hours minimum.

Donner Memorial State Park 12593 Donner Pass Rd. Truckee, CA 96161 USA Phone: (530) 582-7892 Donner Memorial State Park, 2 mi. w. on Donner Pass Rd., is near the site where the ill-fated Donner party was stranded trying to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains during the severe winter of 1846-47. As members of the 89-person party died, some of those remaining resorted to cannibalism; only 47 were rescued. The Emigrant Trail Museum has exhibits about railroad and natural history, logging and immigrants. The Pioneer Monument is near the museum.

The Gondola at Heavenly US 50 & Stateline South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150 USA Phone: (775) 586-7000 The Gondola at Heavenly is at US 50 and Stateline. Eight-passenger gondola cabins transport riders 2.4 miles up the mountain, providing scenic views of Lake Tahoe, the Desolation Wilderness and the Carson Valley. A mid-station viewing deck is placed around a granite outcropping. Hiking trails and a climbing wall can be accessed from the top of the mountain at an elevation of 9,123 feet. Allow 1 hour minimum.

Guided tours of the Rubicon Trail, 9,150-foot Genoa Peak, the High Sierra and the high desert of Nevada are available by ATVs, dune buggies, Jeeps and Hummers. Guides drive and show you the sights in Jeeps and Hummers, or guests, led by guides, drive themselves in ATVs and dune buggies. Snowmobile and other tours also are available.

The Emerald Bay Cruise, a 2.25-hour narrated sightseeing/lunch excursion, provides information about lake history, its flora and fauna and the recreation areas and historic homes along the lake's shore. Family Fun and Tales of Tahoe cruises are other choices. Dinner cruises also are available. Allow 2 hours, 30 minutes minimum.
